Dagen’s News Articles

Jesse Watters, the irreverent and contentious co-host of Fox News’ roundtable show “The Five” and one of the channel’s most divisive characters, will be given a nightly hour.

Watters’ appointment comes two weeks after he made fiery remarks against Dr. Anthony Fauci at Turning Point USA’s Americafest, a right-wing gathering held in Phoenix. Watters advised the audience to challenge infectious disease professionals with inquiries regarding the coronavirus’s origins.

“Now you go in for the kill shot,” said Watters, according to a video clip of his appearance. “The kill shot with an ambush, deadly, because he doesn’t see it coming. This is when you say, ‘Dr. Fauci, you funded risky research at a sloppy Chinese lab, the same lab that sprung this pandemic on the world.’”

Watters described the impact of such an encounter as “Boom! He is no longer alive! He is no longer alive! He’s finished!”

Watters, 43, encouraged the crowd to be courteous and “make sure it’s legal,” but the remarks were deemed inappropriate given that Fauci, President Biden’s main medical advisor, has received death threats. Fox News pundits, who have been harshly critical of Fauci’s handling of the health issue, have fueled part of the outrage directed at him.

When confronted about the violent metaphor by CNN, Fauci demanded Watters be fired. However, Fox News did not apologize, claiming Watters was just implying that Fauci should be exposed to stiffer media grilling.

Dagen McDowell left, and Jessica Tarlov, with Fox News co-hosts of 'The Five,' Jesse Watters, Dana Perino and Greg Gutfeld.

Fox News seldom responds to unfavorable input about its hosts, and employment choices are heavily influenced by Nielsen ratings. Watters’ fill-in appearances have fared well since the network began experimenting with presenters in the 7 p.m. Eastern hour, particularly among viewers in the 25-to-54 age bracket, which advertisers like.

Watters is well-known among Fox News viewers. In 2002, he started as a production assistant and a year later began appearing on Bill O’Reilly’s show, where he performed ambush interviews with the host’s favorite on-air targets.

Watters also appeared on O’Reilly’s show in person-on-the-street segments, some of which were criticized for being insulting to their targets. Watters asked residents of New York’s Chinatown in 2016 if he should bow to meet them, if they were selling stolen items, and if they could “take care of North Korea for us.”

Watters, who has had a weekend show on Fox News since 2017, makes no pretense of being a journalist or a serious critic. He enjoys infuriating Fox News detractors on the left with his unorthodox viewpoints. “How I Saved the World,” his most recent best-selling book, is titled.

Fox News said early last year that it will hand over the 7 p.m. hour to an opinion host, relegating news anchor Martha MacCallum to an earlier time period. At the time, the network was losing viewers, many of whom were upset because it had correctly predicted Donald Trump’s election defeat in Arizona on election night, despite the fact that the results were still quite close.
