WUFT  is a public television station based in Gainesville, Florida. Along with low-power independent station WRUF-LD , NPR member WUFT-FM (89.1), and commercial radio stations WRUF (850 AM) and WRUF-FM, it is owned by the University of Florida (103.7). WUFT’s transmitter is located on Northwest 53rd Avenue in Gainesville, and the five stations share studios at Weimer Hall on the University’s campus.

In north-central Florida, WUFT serves 16 counties. It has also been available on cable in Jacksonville for decades, currently on Comcast Xfinity channel 25, giving viewers a second option for PBS programming in addition to WJCT. On November 17, 1958, WUFT went on the air with educational programs, becoming Florida’s third educational television station.

The station benefited greatly from a flaw in the FCC’s plan for allocating stations. There were 12 VHF channels and 69 UHF channels available in the early days of broadcast television (later reduced to 55 in 1983). The VHF channels were preferred because they could transmit data over longer distances. Because there were only 12 VHF channels available, the stations could only be positioned so close together.

In one yard, nearly a dozen have gathered, oinking and waving their brown tails as they appear to debate what to do next. A man standing nearby says only one pig belongs to him; the rest, he believes, were abandoned after the storm. Miles away, in towns like Yabucoa and Levittown, once-domesticated dogs and cats forage for food. Their bones poke out from their fur.

Pablo de los Santos spent four years living alone in Florida before he was able to bring his wife to come live with him. Now the only thing he waits for is the day to be reunited with his daughters. “I am not worried about my American Dream, only that of my daughters,” Santos said. De los Santos is a Cuban immigrant living in Gainesville and his stories parallels that of many other Cuban immigrants.
