In his mid-thirties, Palahniuk began writing novels. According to his story, he began writing while attending Tom Spanbauer’s writer seminars, which he went to meet new people. Palahniuk’s minimalistic writing style was heavily influenced by Spanbauer.
After his debut novel, Invisible Monsters, was rejected by every publisher he approached, he began work on Fight Club, his most famous work. While working for Freightliner, Palahniuk created this novella in his leisure time. After first releasing it as a short tale in the 1995 anthology Pursuit of Happiness, Palahniuk developed it into a whole novel, which a publisher accepted, much to his surprise. The book’s initial hardcover version garnered great reviews and won some accolades, but it only lasted a few months.
Palahniuk initially failed to acquire a literary agent and went without one until after Fight Club was published. Edward Hibbert, an actor and literary agent, signed Palahniuk after he received interest from 20th Century Fox. Hibbert was ultimately responsible for guiding and brokering the arrangement that brought Fight Club to the big screen. Director David Fincher’s film adaptation of the novel was released in 1999, three years after the novel’s publication.
Palahniuk’s life was rocked by a series of major personal disasters in 1999. His father, Fred Palahniuk, had begun dating Donna Fontaine, whom he had met through a personal ad titled “Kismet.” Dale Shackelford, her ex-boyfriend, had previously been incarcerated for sexual abuse and had threatened to kill Fontaine as soon as he was released. Fontaine, Palahniuk believes, was seeking for “the biggest man she could find” to protect her from Shackelford, and Palahniuk’s father fit the bill.
