CNN employed her as an entry-level desk assistant on the foreign desk in Atlanta, Georgia, in 1983. Amanpour’s first significant assignment as a correspondent was covering the Iran–Iraq War, which led to her being relocated to Eastern Europe in 1986 to report on the fall of European communism.
She was sent to Frankfurt am Main, West Germany, in 1989 to cover the democratic movements that were sweeping Eastern Europe at the time. She rose through the ranks of the firm thanks to this role, and by 1990, she was a correspondent for CNN’s New York office.
