Dean received his bachelor’s degree in nutrition from the University of Rhode Island and his master’s degree in nutrition from Tufts University. Brian Dean had aspirations of becoming a professor at one time. But he later enrolled in a Ph.D. program at Purdue.
Dean despised his job after discovering that his adviser was a jerk. As a result, he chose to leave my Ph.D. program and work as a dietician. Unfortunately, this was the year 2008, and the world was in the grip of a financial crisis. Getting a job was difficult, particularly for a recent graduate with no experience. But it was Timothy Ferriss’s The 4-Hour Workweek that set Dean on his entrepreneurial path.
Dean started working on his first information product, an e-book on back discomfort, soon after reading Ferriss’ book. Unfortunately, he had also accepted a full-time job as a nutritionist, which limited his writing time. His e-book company faltered as a result of his full-time employment, so he ended up employing writers from Elance to assist him to develop material.
He wasn’t thrilled with their writing and thought to himself, “I could do better than these people.” So he began writing for customers on Elance, which wasn’t the four-hour workweek lifestyle he desired, but it covered the bills enough for him to be able to leave his job.
Dean worked on his “lifestyle” niche company, including the creation of various specialized websites. He also worked as a freelancer for Livestrong, contributing 12 articles each day to the fitness website.
Brain Dean stopped working with Elance clients to devote his time completely to writing for Livestrong and developing material for his own websites. He got caught up in the 2009/2010 “niche website” mania and constructed over 150 websites at one point. Because they were all one-page exact match domains, he got interested in SEO as a method to create a passive income.
These sorts of specialized websites were created at the time to attract people to businesses or services and generate referral fees or ad income from Google AdSense. This was a more advanced period of black-hat methods, with individuals creating keyword-stuffed material and backlinks from everywhere to deceive Google into placing them high in search results.
