Bret Baier is an American news journalist and political correspondent who is the host of Special Report with Bret Baier on the Fox News Channel and the chief political correspondent for Fox.
Baier currently holds the position of Chief Political Anchor and is the host of “Special Report with Bret Baier” on FOX News Channel. This show, airing on weeknights from 6 PM to 7 PM, consistently ranks among the top cable news programs and has claimed the number one spot in its time slot. Based in Washington, D.C., Baier’s journey with FOX News began in 1998 when he joined as the network’s inaugural reporter in the Atlanta bureau.
His career in television commenced at a local station in Rockford, Illinois, before advancing to WRAL-TV, a CBS affiliate in Raleigh, North Carolina. It was in 1998 that he made his mark with an audition tape sent to Fox News, leading to his appointment as the network’s Atlanta bureau chief.
During a pivotal moment in history, Bret’s trajectory shifted dramatically. In response to the Pentagon attack, he embarked on a journey from Georgia to Arlington, Virginia, to cover the events. Subsequently, he remained at the Pentagon as the network’s correspondent for five years, undertaking numerous trips to Afghanistan and Iraq, totaling 11 and 13, respectively.
In 2007, he assumed the role of Fox News’s White House correspondent, where he reported on the George W. Bush administration. His association with “Special Report” commenced when he began substituting for Brit Hume, who was then the anchor, particularly on Fridays.
In a significant transition, on December 23, 2008, Brit Hume anchored his last show, and it was revealed that Baier would succeed him as the permanent anchor of “Special Report.” His inaugural episode as the anchor aired on January 5, 2009.
Notably, an internal email from Jen Psaki, the Deputy White House Communications Director, surfaced during an investigation into potential anti-Fox News bias within the Barack Obama administration. In this email, dated October 23, 2009, Baier was referred to as a “lunatic.”
