Barbara Walters The Today Show

In 1961, Walters began working as a writer and researcher for NBC’s The Today Show. She rose through the ranks to become the show’s regular “Today Girl,” handling lighter duties and the weather. Within a year, she had advanced to the position of reporter-at-large, creating, writing, and editing her own reports and interviews.

After McGee’s (former host of the show) death in 1974, NBC officially designated Walters as the program’s first female co-host. Beginning in 1971, she also hosted her own local NBC affiliate show, Not for Women Only, which aired after The Today Show in the mornings.

Barbara Walters ABC Wikipedia

Barbara thereafter landed a job at ABC Evening news where she was paired with Harry Reasoner who evidently showed his dislike of the team up with Walters and would often show his disdain on air. Even though he worked nightly on ABC with former CBS colleague Howard K. Smith for several years, Reasoner had a difficult relationship with Walters because he disliked having a co-anchor. Walters has stated that the tension between the two was caused by Reasoner’s refusal to work with a co-anchor and his dissatisfaction with ABC, not because he disliked Walters personally.

In 1981, five years after the start of their brief ABC partnership and long after Reasoner had returned to CBS News, Walters and her former co-anchor had a memorable (and cordial) 20/20 interview to celebrate the release of Reasoner’s new book.

Walters has appeared as a commentator on ABC news specials throughout her career, including presidential inaugurations and 9/11 coverage. During the 1976 presidential election, she was also chosen to moderate the third and final debate between candidates Jimmy Carter and Gerald Ford, which was held on the campus of the College of William and Mary at Phi Beta Kappa Memorial Hall in Williamsburg, Virginia.
