Barbara Knox is a British actress best known for playing Rita Tanner in the ITV serial opera Coronation Street for almost a decade. Rita is one of the most well-known and well-liked characters in any British soap drama. She is known for being one of the world’s longest-serving contemporary television soap opera performers.
Knox dropped out of school at the age of 15 and went to work as a telegraphist in the Post Office, where he learned shorthand and typing as well as passing Civil Service tests. She worked in offices, shops, and a factory, among other places.
Knox participated in amateur theatre at this period until Carl Paulsen, the director of Oldham Rep, requested her to appear in The Boyfriend in 1962, which was her professional stage debut. Knox went on to star in shows including Never Mind the Quality, Feel the Width, George and the Dragon, and A Family at War, as well as a time on Emergency – Ward 10.
She also had a brief role as a dancer in the musical adaptation of Goodbye, Mr. Chips (1969), and for BBC radio’s Comedy Half Hour, she played everything from announcer to stooge alongside several of the UK’s finest comedians. In 1972, she co-starred in the sketch show Funny You Should Say That with Ken Dodd.
